Joby Aviation, the U.S.-based developer of all-electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) air taxis, has achieved a major milestone by completing its first piloted flight between two U.S. public airports.
The demonstrator aircraft (N545JX) flew from Marina Municipal Airport (OAR) to Monterey Regional Airport (MRY), covering 10 nautical miles in 12 minutes. The flight included a vertical take-off, transition to wing-borne flight, integration into FAA-controlled airspace, and vertical landing, along with a holding pattern to accommodate other air traffic.
Joby said the mission marks the first time a piloted eVTOL air taxi has flown between public airports, demonstrating readiness for real-world operations and compliance with FAA air traffic protocols.
“Flying from Marina to Monterey showcased our ability to integrate into the broader transportation network and validated our aircraft’s performance as we prepare for commercial service,” said Didier Papadopoulos, President of Aircraft OEM at Joby.
Joby has completed over 40,000 miles of test flying and is preparing for Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) testing with the FAA in 2026. The company aims to launch commercial air taxi services in Los Angeles and New York City following certification.
